Description
A dark, whimsical Halloween Witch Cake that’s moist, chocolatey, and decorated with green vanilla buttercream, black chocolate buttercream, and fondant witch hats for a magical, family-friendly centerpiece.

- 1¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (dark cocoa gives a richer flavor)
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- 1½ cups granulated sugar
- ¾ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- ½ cup hot water
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 1½ cups unsalted butter, softened
- 5 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 2 tbsp heavy cream
- 2 tsp clear vanilla extract
- Green gel food coloring
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- ½ cup cocoa powder (black cocoa if available)
- 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 2 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Black gel food coloring
- Black fondant
- White fondant
- Cornstarch (for dusting)
- Edible glue or water
- Halloween sprinkle mix: black nonpareils, green jimmies, white sugar pearls
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch round pans.
- Whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, whisk sugar, oil, and eggs until light. Add buttermilk and vanilla.
- Stir in dry ingredients gradually. Add hot water and mix until smooth.
- Divide into pans and bake 30–35 minutes. Cool completely.
- Beat butter for green buttercream, add powdered sugar gradually, mix in cream and vanilla, tint with green food coloring.
- Beat butter for black buttercream, add cocoa powder, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla. Tint with black gel coloring and rest 10 minutes.
- Level cakes. Spread green buttercream between layers and frost outside. Chill 30 minutes.
- Pipe black buttercream border and swirl on top for a witch hat cone.
- Roll out black fondant, cut hat shapes, add white fondant buckles, attach with glue, and place around cake.
- Scatter sprinkles and add a larger fondant hat on the top swirl. Chill before serving.
Notes
Switch colors for variety (purple and orange also work). Turn into cupcakes for parties. Try mint in buttercream or espresso in cake for variations. Use boxed mix if short on time. Store in fridge, bring to room temp before serving, and enjoy within 3 days.
