Description

These Apple Hand Pies are the perfect portable treat filled with sweet, spiced apple goodness, wrapped in a flaky pastry. Ideal for cozy family gatherings or a quick snack on the go, this recipe is easy, versatile, and a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2/3 cup unsalted butter (cold and diced into small pieces)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp cold water
  • 2 cups diced baking apples (peeled and finely diced)
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice (freshly ground if you have it)
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, mix 2 cups of all-purpose flour with 1 tsp of salt.
  2. Add cold diced butter and use a pastry cutter to incorporate it into the flour until the mixture resembles small crumbs.
  3. Drizzle 4 tbsp of cold water over the mixture, toss with a fork, and knead gently until dough forms. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/6-inch thickness. Cut out 12 circles using a round cutter or small bowl.
  5. In a small bowl, toss 2 cups of diced apples with 1/4 cup sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp allspice.
  6. Spoon 1 tbsp of the apple filling onto each dough circle, brush the edges with egg wash, and fold over to seal. Press edges with a fork.
  7. Place pies on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush tops with egg wash, and cut 3 small slits on top of each pie.
  8. Bake at 425°F for 18-20 minutes until golden brown. Cool for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

These hand pies are perfect for picnics, lunchboxes, or a sweet treat anytime! Feel free to experiment with other fruits like pears or peaches for a twist.
